British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made a statement about a ceasefire in Ukraine. He said that if russian dictator vladimir putin does not agree to it, then a coalition of countries will increase pressure.
This is reported by The Guardian portal.
Starmer said that today [March 15] he held telephone talks with colleagues from across Europe, the NATO Secretary General, the leaders of the European Commission, the EU Council, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to discuss support for Ukraine.
"We will strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and armed forces and will be ready to deploy as a “coalition of willing” in the event of a peace agreement to help ensure Ukraine's security on land, at sea and in the air," the British Prime Minister said.
He added that in the event of a ceasefire, the parties stressed the need to take tough monitoring measures to ensure that any violations of the agreement are identified and stopped. At the same time, there is agreement on pressure on putin if he does not agree to negotiations and a ceasefire.
"We agreed that if president putin refuses to agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, we will need to intensify our efforts to strengthen Ukraine, weaken the russian military machine and increase pressure on president putin to persuade him to come to the negotiating table," Starmer was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
The head of the British government explained that to achieve this goal, military support will be accelerated and sanctions on russian revenues will be strengthened. In addition, the countries will continue to explore all legal ways to ensure that russia pays for the damage caused to Ukraine.
"We have agreed to continue these discussions within the group in the coming days to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine," he concluded.
