AFU increases use of drones on fiber optics, - Syrskyi

The Forces of Unmanned Systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are increasing the use of drones on fiber optics control.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi announced this on Facebook, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

Syrskyi noted that the russian army is adopting Ukrainian experience and building on its own developments in the field of drones.

He reported that he heard an intelligence report on the formation of unmanned systems forces in the Armed Forces of russia, where the Directorate of the Chief of the Unmanned Systems Forces has been formed, rapid response UAV units have been created, and the direction of drones with fiber optics control is being developed.

"We are also increasing the use of drones in fiber-optic control. However, this component of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces requires exceptional attention and maximum efforts. We simply have no right to lag behind the enemy in those areas of technological warfare where we must arm and strengthen ourselves at the expense of our own resources," the Commander-in-Chief noted.

Syrskyi set the task of staffing the relevant Unmanned Systems Forces units.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Syrskyi also reported that in February, the Unmanned Systems Forces hit and destroyed 22% more enemy targets compared to January.

In February, the Ministry of Defense reported that in 2025, more than UAH 44 billion will be allocated for the purchase of FPV drones, including fiber-optic ones.

At the end of December, the head of the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that the occupiers began to massively use UAVs with cables at the front, which creates a big problem in the context of drone warfare. These are drones to which a coil with a fiber-optic cable is attached, which makes it impossible to suppress the drone using electronic warfare, since the communication between the device and the operator is carried out not via a radio channel, but directly via a wire.
