The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Food and Consumer Protection Service of Ukraine held successful negotiations with the Canadian side, as a result of which the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approved a program for the export of fresh apples from Ukraine to Canada.
This is stated in a message from the State Food and Consumer Protection Service, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
The message states that Ukrainian producers have received new opportunities for export to the Canadian market.
"Demand for Ukrainian products is only growing every year in the international trade arena. Today, Canada is opening its market for our apples. The State Food and Consumer Protection Service, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, processes each request from businesses to open new sales markets. And not only some countries are considered, but the entire world map: America, the countries of the European Union, Africa, East Asia," emphasized Serhii Tkachuk, Head of the State Food and Consumer Protection Service.
Canada has already updated import requirements for Ukraine in its Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) and approved the Export Program for Ukrainian Apples (Malus domestica) to Canada, which provides for the following key aspects:
- Apple growers, packing companies and exporters must be registered with the State Food and Consumer Protection Service and included in the List of Exporters, Producers and Packers of Ukrainian Apples to Canada;
- Orchard surveillance must be conducted under the control of the State Food and Consumer Protection Service to predict the spread of pests and provide recommendations for their control;
- Pest control measures must ensure that registered operators maintain a low prevalence or absence of pests regulated by Canada;
- Enterprises must use sorting equipment to remove mites, insects, other pests and dirt, etc.
A phytosanitary certificate issued by the State Food and Consumer Protection Service must be issued for each shipment.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, at the end of September 2023, Ukraine and Canada signed an updated free trade agreement.
