European Union countries are considering a scenario of a new mass arrival of Ukrainian refugees in the event of an escalation of the war and the cessation of US military aid.
Politico reported this.
According to the publication, the governments of European countries are preparing for a possible increase in the number of refugees from Ukraine.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said: "If Putin escalates this war even further and the American support should disappear, and if this should lead to a larger refugee movement … we need a binding distribution of the Ukraine refugees throughout the EU, according to a fair mechanism."
At the same time, she clarified that a sharp increase in the number of refugees is not expected at the moment, and this topic is only the subject of discussions at the ministerial level. "Germany will stand by Ukraine as long as Putin’s terrible attack against Ukraine continues," Faeser emphasized.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner noted that his country has already done its part in accepting Ukrainians and is now focusing on their integration.
"Per capita, Austria has clearly taken in more (refugees - ed.) than many other countries," Karner said.
As of December 2024, according to Eurostat, more than 4.3 million Ukrainians have received temporary protection in EU countries. Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic have accepted the most refugees.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the integration of Ukrainian citizens in the German labor market is showing significant progress. As of November 2024, the number of workers from Ukraine reached 296,000, which is 230,500 more than before the start of the full-scale war.
