Ukraine and Britain sign defense deal worth over GBP 2 billion

Ukraine and the United Kingdom have signed a loan agreement worth GBP 2.26 billion (about USD 3 billion), which is aimed at strengthening the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian state.

The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine has reported this.

This loan, for a period of 30 years, will be repaid at the expense of profits from frozen russian assets. The agreement became part of a broader initiative of the G7 countries — Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration for Ukraine (ERA) — the total volume of which is USD 50 billion. The allocated funds will be used for the purchase of weapons.

The Minister of Finance of Ukraine Serhii Marchenko and the Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom Rachel Reeves have signed the document. The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer have attended the ceremony.

The Minister of Finance Serhii Marchenko emphasized that this agreement is a confirmation of the unwavering support of Ukraine from the British government. He separately thanked Rachel Reeves for her contribution to reaching this agreement.

Recall that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer asked U.S. President Donald Trump for a backup plan for a possible peacekeeping mission, the sending of which to Ukraine is currently being discussed in Europe.
