Former French President François Hollande, who is now a member of the country's National Assembly, said that the U.S. under President Donald Trump is no longer an ally of Europe.
According to Politico, Hollande said this in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde.
"Trump is no longer an ally, he communicates with our adversaries <...> Even if the American people remain our friend, the Trump administration itself is no longer our ally," Hollande said.
According to him, Trump's decision to hold direct talks with russian dictator vladimir putin and the U.S. vote against a draft UN resolution condemning russia's invasion of Ukraine signal an approaching "divorce" between the U.S. and Europe.
Hollande also commented on French President Emmanuel Macron's recent visit to Washington to meet with Trump.
He did not criticize Macron, but stressed that the visit would have been more effective if other European leaders had been with him.
Hollande also disagreed with the words spoken the day before by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. He said that Macron's visit to Washington had "satisfactory results."
Francois Hollande held the French presidency from 2012 to 2017. He and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel mediated between Ukraine and russia during the conclusion of the Minsk agreements, which established a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine but did not prevent moscow from launching a full-scale invasion in 2022.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the day before, Reuters wrote that European foreign ministers recognized that Trump's arrival marked the entry of Europe into a new era. At the same time, they hope to preserve transatlantic relations.
