President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, his words are quoted by the Financial Times and Reuters.
Baier asked Zelenskyy whether Ukraine would be able to resist russia without American help.
"It will be difficult without your support, but we cannot lose our values <...> We cannot lose our freedom," the President replied.
According to him, russia came to Ukraine, destroyed cities and killed a large number of people.
"Just to forget about it, just to say that Putin is a great guy, no," he emphasized.
With these words, Zelenskyy was probably alluding to recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump. The day before, he refused to call vladimir putin a dictator, and later he even said that he is a "very smart" politician.
The Ukrainian President also drew attention to another recent statement by Trump that he is "in the middle between Zelenskyy and Putin", does not support either of them and seeks to end the war.
"I want him to be more on our side," Zelenskyy said.
He added that he does not want to lose "great partners" from the United States of America. At the same time, he described in detail a number of things that the Trump administration has incorrectly indicated in the past. These are the number of people killed or the amount of military aid.
The President emphasized that a thorough check of all military aid and direct financial support for the Ukrainian budget is being carried out, and that all this information is available.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in an interview with Fox News, Zelenskyy said that he is ready to return to diplomacy after the United States offers Ukraine security guarantees.
Zelenskyy also does not consider it necessary to apologize to Trump for the public altercation that occurred on February 28 in the Oval Office of the White House.
