President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine and the U.S. are very close to signing an agreement on minerals. The document no longer mentions the debt that Ukraine allegedly incurred to the U.S.
He said this during a press conference, Suspilne reports.
"The main thing for me was that we are not debtors, despite what is said in the media. The agreement does not include a debt of either 500 billion, 350, or 100, it would be unfair to us," the President said.
Zelenskyy warned that now Ukraine and the U.S. must sign a framework agreement, which will be specified in the future.
The President also added that the agreement does not contain all the security guarantees that Ukraine wanted to see, but added: "I wanted there to be at least a sentence about guarantees, and it is in the framework agreement, paragraph 10."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that the agreement between Ukraine and the United States on minerals has been prepared, it is directly tied to security guarantees for Ukraine.
On February 24, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration - Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna reported that the teams of Ukraine and the United States are in the final stage of negotiations on the agreement on minerals.
According to American media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump is expecting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to visit the United States on February 28 to sign an agreement on mineral extraction.
