As part of the agreement on US access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals, the US will not become the owner of physical assets in Ukraine. This is an offer of economic partnership for the security of post-war Ukraine.
This was reported by US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent in an op-ed for the Financial Times.
Bessent noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself offered to give the US a share in Ukrainian rare earth elements and critical minerals. According to him, it was the Ukrainian President who first proposed to Trump a future economic partnership with mutual benefits for both nations. Partnership with the Americans will ensure the prosperity of Ukraine, Bessent emphasized.
"In a similar vein, President Trump's innovative approach represents a new model for productive international partnerships. Let's also be clear about what it is not. The United States will not become the owner of physical assets in Ukraine. It will also not burden Ukraine with additional debt. This type of economic pressure, applied by other global actors, would not advance the interests of either America or Ukraine. To create more value in the long term, the United States should invest with the people of Ukraine so that both sides have an incentive to get as much as possible," the US Secretary of the Treasury said.
This economic partnership would lay the foundation for a lasting peace and send a signal to the people of Ukraine and the United States, as well as to the russian government, about the importance of Ukraine's future sovereignty and success to the United States.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on February 18, Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna said that Ukraine had not rejected the US offer for access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals.
On February 18, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the draft agreement on Ukrainian rare earth minerals from the United States was that Ukraine should give 50% of what is listed in the document.
On February 23, the head of the President's Office, Andrii Yermak, said that the normal working process is underway regarding the agreement with the United States on Ukrainian minerals.
