Germany holding Bundestag elections

On Sunday, February 23, Germany is holding snap elections to the Bundestag. They were called after the collapse of the government coalition that had been in power for the previous three years.

Voting began at 8 a.m. local time (9 a.m. Kyiv time), when polling stations opened. At the same time, the results of exit polls will be known today at 6 p.m. after the polling stations closed (7 p.m. Kyiv time).

It is noted that more than 59 million German citizens can take part in the vote. There are about 65,000 polling stations in the country. There are 299 electoral districts in Germany.

29 parties are participating in the election race.

According to polls conducted on the eve of the elections, the most support among respondents was for the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, which nominated Friedrich Merz as its candidate for chancellor. In second place, according to the polls, was the far-right Alternative for Germany, followed by the Social Democratic Party of Germany, to which the current Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz belongs.

As Ukrainian News Agency reported, earlier, the leader of the CDU and the most likely candidate for chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, announced his intention to change Berlin's policy regarding the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine after the elections.
