On Monday, the UN General Assembly will consider at least two draft resolutions for the third anniversary of the russian war against Ukraine - from a group of the majority of democratic countries, including Ukraine, and the American version.
As Ukrinform's own correspondent in New York reports, the authors of the collective draft, which, in particular, calls on russia to "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders," were 58 countries.
Among them are all EU states, including Hungary and Slovakia, the vast majority of other European countries, including Great Britain, Moldova, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, as well as Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Liberia, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau and others.
According to The Washington Post, the US administration asked Ukraine to withdraw a collective draft initiated by official Kyiv, condemning the russian war, but was refused, since the American version was perceived in Kyiv as "close to a pro-russian" position and as an attempt to limit any responsibility of Moscow for the invasion.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement on Friday, saying that Washington "has proposed a simple historic resolution at the UN" and called on "all member states to support it in order to pave the way for peace."
"By supporting this resolution, we confirm that this conflict is terrible, that the UN can help end it, and that peace is possible. We firmly believe that now is the time to make a commitment to end the war," the statement said.
