According to media reports, the EU has begun discussions on providing Ukraine with EUR 20 billion in military aid amid U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to quickly reach peace with russia.
According to a Bloomberg source, the funds will be used to purchase artillery ammunition, air defense systems, precision missiles, drones and other weapons. Part of the funds will go to strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces brigades.
It is reported that the EU is seeking to adopt an initiative for in-kind and cash contributions from the bloc's member states and like-minded allies for the package. It is planned to agree on it next week at a meeting of the heads of foreign ministries of the European Union countries. After that, the bloc's leaders are to agree on the amounts and sign the package.
At the same time, the agency stressed that the above-mentioned deadlines may be disrupted. In particular, Hungary has said it will not support any new military aid package for Ukraine, and Germany will hold parliamentary elections on February 23, the results of which will also have a significant impact.
The EU is seeking to quickly develop a plan to support Ukraine and provide Kyiv with security guarantees in the event of a peace agreement with russia. The bloc is also seeking to increase its own defense spending after the United States began negotiations with russia.
