US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine has violated the agreement on rare earth minerals, which was supposed to help the United States compensate for the costs of supporting Kyiv.
Trump said this during a speech in Miami, Suspilne reports.
According to Trump, the United States has spent "USD 200 billion more than Europe" on aid to Ukraine. He emphasized that "Europe gives money under guarantees and gets money back, it's a form of loan. We're just giving away our money," the American President said.
Trump also noted that the agreement on rare earth metals was supposed to be a way to return some of the money spent. "We're just giving away our money, and we had an agreement on rare earth metals and other things, but they (Ukraine - ed.) violated this agreement. They violated it two days ago," Trump said.
At the same time, he criticized the previous US administration for ineffective economic policies, which, in his opinion, allowed Europe to receive financial benefits without proper exchange.
Earlier, US President's National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, commenting on Trump's latest statements, mentioned the "escalation of rhetoric" and "resistance" to the agreement on the development of Ukrainian minerals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that any agreement with the US on rare earth minerals must contain security guarantees for Ukraine.
Recall, according to the Financial Times, Zelenskyy rejected the US proposal to transfer about 50% of the rights to Ukrainian rare earth minerals to them, since the agreement did not have clear security guarantees from the United States.
