Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Munich Security Conference called for the creation of the Armed Forces of Europe.
"Let's be frank, now we cannot rule out the possibility that America may say "no" to Europe on issues that threaten it. Many leaders are talking about Europe needing its own army, the army of Europe. I truly believe that the time has come: the Armed Forces of Europe must be created," the President said during his speech.
According to Zelenskyy, this is "no more difficult than standing firm against russian strikes, as we have already done," but it is not only about increasing defense spending.
"Of course, funds are needed, but funds alone cannot stop the enemy's advance. People and weapons are not free, but, again, it is not only about budgets, it is about people. Awareness of the need to protect their own home," he stressed.
The President of Ukraine also noted that without the Ukrainian army, the European military forces will not be enough to stop russia, because only our army in Europe now has modern war experience, but our army alone is not enough either.
"We need what you can provide: weapons, training, sanctions, financing, political pressure and unity. Three years of full-scale war have proven that we have the basis for a united European military force. And now, while we are waging this war and laying the foundations for peace and security, we must build the Armed Forces of Europe so that the European future depends only on Europeans and decisions about Europe are made in Europe," the President said.
