The U.S. may impose new sanctions against russia if president vladimir putin doesn't agree to a peace deal that would guarantee Ukraine's long-term independence. At the same time, the possibility of sending U.S. troops to Ukraine is being considered.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated this in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
According to him, Washington has both economic and military leverage over the kremlin.
Vance's statement came a few hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to start negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. The Vice President noted that the peace deal may come as a surprise to many.
"I think this will be a deal that will shock a lot of people," he said.
At the same time, Vance stressed that it is too early to talk about the details of possible agreements, in particular about territorial issues or security guarantees for Kyiv.
Recall, speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump confirmed that Ukraine would get a seat at the negotiating table with russia on a possible ceasefire.
Earlier today, February 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Trump's negotiations with russian dictator vladimir putin cannot begin without a united position of Ukraine, the European Union, and the United States.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Euronews claims, citing sources, that at the Munich Conference, Zelenskyy will meet with the U.S. Secretary of State and Vice President.
And Trump's special envoy for russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said on February 5 that at the Munich Security Conference he will discuss the issue of ending the war.
