Ukraine's NATO membership unrealistic – Pentagon chief

The United States is committed to a sovereign Ukraine, but a peace agreement that provides for possible NATO membership is not a realistic outcome.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said this, Bloomberg reports.

Hegseth also said that U.S. troops will not be deployed in Ukraine as part of security guarantees, and that Ukraine's return to the borders that existed before 2014, before russia's invasion of Crimea, is impossible.

"Pursuing this illusory goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering," he said.

At the same time, he added that the EU should "step into the arena" and take more responsibility for the continent's security.

Recall that Zelenskyy considers NATO security guarantees for Ukraine the cheapest for Europe, the United States and russia.

In addition, Zelenskyy called for the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine until the country is accepted into NATO.
