Trump's Ukraine plan: EU to pay nearly USD 3 trillion - Bloomberg

U.S. President Donald Trump is beginning to tell European Union leaders what they must do to ensure peace in Ukraine. However, his demands could put a significant financial burden on European countries.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

According to the publication, on Wednesday Trump held telephone talks with russian president vladimir putin.

The U.S.'s European allies did not receive any notification of this and were shocked by the event. One European official called the situation a "sellout", saying that the U.S. was giving in to putin's key demands even before the talks began.

"For all Trump’s confidence, the path to a deal remains highly uncertain, with Putin showing no inclination that he wants to compromise on his longstanding demands and his goal of colonizing Ukraine apparently unchanged," Bloomberg notes.

Defense spending to counter russia

According to Bloomberg Economics, if the U.S. cuts support for Kyiv, EU countries will be forced to urgently build up their own military capabilities.

It is expected that:

  • The restoration of the Ukrainian army could cost USD 175 billion over 10 years.
  • The bulk of the funding will go to building up the military potential of EU countries and increasing the defense budget to 3.5% of GDP.
  • Additional funding will be directed to artillery reserves, air defense and missile systems.

According to analysts, financing defense needs through debt could add another USD 2.7 trillion to the debt of the five largest European NATO members over the next decade.

In total, the expansion of the EU armies, together with the defense of Ukraine, could cost USD 3.1 trillion over the next 10 years.

Recall that Zelenskyy considers NATO security guarantees for Ukraine to be the cheapest for Europe, the U.S. and russia.

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Ukraine, France, the UK, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, and the European Union have declared their readiness to strengthen support for Ukraine and insist on Europe's participation in future negotiations to end the war.
