The Duolingo language learning app’s social media has reported the death of its owl mascot Duo. In recent years, the bird has gained particular popularity on the Internet due to its passive-aggressive manner of controlling task completion.
According to media reports, the owl’s “death” is also part of a new marketing campaign, but its continuation is still unknown.
The message was not without sarcastic jokes. So, Duolingo reported the start of an investigation, but suggested that the bird died before “you finished your lesson.”
“We know that Duo had many enemies, but we ask that you refrain from specifying the reasons for your hatred in the comments. If you still want to share, please leave your credit card number immediately so that we can automatically connect you to the Duolingo Max tariff in memory of Duo,” the message says.
As expected, the death message went viral on social media: in X alone it gained over 550,000 likes. In the comments, users actively shared jokes and memes about Duo. Accounts of a wide variety of well-known brands also participated in the discussion of the owl's death, including Netflix, Xbox, Halo and Assasin's Creed.
The Duolingo application also temporarily changed its icon.

It is possible that the authors of the program want to change the appearance of the owl, as has already happened in the past, or conduct a partial rebranding. In addition, other companies have already made similar moves with the alleged death of mascots. One way or another, we should not expect that Duolingo suddenly decided to abandon its famous mascot.
As previously reported, the American service Duolingo removed LGBT content in order to remain in operation in the russian federation.
