The Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NACB), Semen Kryvonos, has confirmed that the Bureau is investigating a case on alleged abuses by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

He said this at a press conference, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"A pre-trial investigation into possible abuses is ongoing," he said.

The NACB Director added that the criminal proceedings were registered based on a statement.

Kryvonos added that the case was opened based on a fact, and not against a specific person.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Anti-Corruption Center filed a statement with the NACB on the commission of a crime by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov under Part 2 of Article 364 of the Criminal Code (abuse of power or official position). As previously reported, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov did not extend the contract with the director of the Defense Procurement Agency state enterprise Maryna Bezrukova, and also initiated the dismissal of his deputy Dmytro Klimenkov. Umerov reported this on his Facebook page. The Minister called the failure of weapons procurement the reason for such actions.

Umerov also announced that Arsen Zhumadilov will be appointed director of the Defense Procurement Agency.
