Chinese leader Xi Jinping has accepted an invitation to attend May 9 celebrations in russia, marking the country's national holiday, Victory Day.

It was reported by Reuters.

"Chinese President Xi Jinping has accepted an invitation to take part in the celebrations on May 9 in Moscow on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War," russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov told russian state television.

Morgulov said Xi had in return invited russian leader vladimir putin to China for the celebrations marking the end of World War II, which are scheduled for September.

In December, the kremlin said it had invited "many countries" to take part in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, which russians use the term "Great Patriotic War." The term refers to the period 1941-1945.

As a reminder, the USSR entered World War II on September 17, 1939, by attacking Poland on the side of the Nazi Third Reich. On June 22, 1941, Germany attacked the USSR, which led to the German-Soviet war, known in russia as the "Great Patriotic War."

The surrender of Nazi Germany took effect at 11:01 p.m. on May 8, 1945, when France, Britain, and the United States celebrated the day as "Victory in Europe Day." In moscow, it was already May 9, which became the "Victory Day" of the Soviet Union in what russians call the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45.
