Syrians and Ukrainians most often try to cross German border illegally – German government

Citizens of Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan and Turkey most often tried to enter Germany without the necessary documents in the second half of 2024.

These statistics were provided by the German government in response to a request from Bundestag members from the Left Party, the DW portal reports.

The share of Syrians among those who tried to enter Germany without the necessary documents in the second half of 2024 is 20.6%, and the share of Ukrainians is almost 20%.

As noted, not every Ukrainian can simply enter Germany.

"Citizens of Ukraine, who have been living abroad for many years, are not threatened by hostilities in Ukraine. Therefore, there is no need for their protection. Changing their place of residence for other reasons without the visa required for long-term residence is impossible on the basis of the relevant resolution," the German government's explanation states.

Overall, the number of attempts to enter Germany without the necessary documents decreased from 127,549 in 2023 to 83,572 in 2024.

The number of travelers without the necessary documents to cross the German border who notified the federal police of their intention to request asylum also decreased.
