US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing it of biased actions against the US and Israel.
The order imposes financial and visa restrictions on individuals involved in the ICC's investigation of US citizens or their allies.
"This malicious behavior [by the ICC] threatens to violate the sovereignty of the United States and undermines critical national security," Trump's executive order says.
The sanctions were imposed during a visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to the BBC, Trump also said that the US plans to "take control" of the Gaza Strip, resettle the Palestinian population and turn the territory into a "Riviera of the Middle East."
The US does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC and is not a party to the Rome Statute. In 2020, Trump already imposed sanctions against the court over its investigation into possible US war crimes in Afghanistan, but they were later lifted by the Joe Biden administration.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 20, 2024, US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson threatened the International Criminal Court with sanctions for issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
On November 21, 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
