The United States will postpone the introduction of import tariffs on Canadian goods for at least 30 days. At the same time, Canada will strengthen border security and fight drug trafficking.
This was stated by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our USD 1.3 billion border plan - reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl,” he wrote on the social network X.
According to him, nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.
In addition, Canada is making a number of commitments:
- appointing a special official to combat fentanyl,
- including drug cartels on the list of terrorist organizations,
- 24-hour border monitoring,
- creating a joint task force with the United States to combat organized crime and financial schemes.
“I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million. Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on February 1, Donald Trump said that he did not rule out signing decrees on the introduction of tariffs on the European Union, Canada, Mexico and China.
Meanwhile, Trump’s tariffs shook the markets, Bitcoin fell below USD 100,000.
