New area with russian fuel oil discovered near Danube Biosphere Reserve

Near the western part of the Dzhantshey and Sasyk estuaries near the Danube Biosphere Reserve, significant areas of the spill were discovered, where fuel oil was found spilled from russian tankers.

Ivan Rusev, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Head of the Research Department of the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park, has reported this.

The contamination was discovered during the survey.

"Fraction of fuel oil is located at a distance of 30 to 50 meters from the edge of the sea water. The size of the fraction varies from 0.5 to 5 cm. The length of the fuel oil spill is 1 km, with an average width of 1 m, but there is such a section of the spill with a length of 200 m and a width of up to 6 m. Feathers of birds that were in the fuel oil were found," Rusev noted.

The scientist emphasizes: an urgent clear plan of response to such terrible challenges is needed, an algorithm for monitoring the appearance of pollution in key areas of the embankment is needed, a plan for the collection and disposal of fuel oil.

According to him, the Odesa Regional Military Administration is fully responsible for these areas, since the sand embankment of the sea in this place is the land of the water fund, and "it, the administration, must either itself or give instructions to the Lyman community to conduct such work, within the framework of which pollution was detected."

"It has already been 5 days since we discovered fuel oil on the sand embankment in various areas and officially informed the society and authorities, but there is neither a clear action plan for monitoring, collection and disposal of fuel oil, nor any practical actions - the fuel oil is still lying in those places," Rusev added.

He stressed that the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park "does everything possible to identify such areas and inform the authorities, and on its territory it does everything on its own."

Recall, on December 19, the Ukrainian Navy announced that the tanker disaster occurred at the dolphin wintering site.

And the day before, it became known that lumps of fuel oil from destroyed russian tankers were spotted near the occupied Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia Region.
