Mandatory Basic General Military Training course will be launched for male university students, women will take it voluntarily – Defense Ministry

The Basic General Military Training (BGMT) course, which will become mandatory for students of higher education institutions from September 1, provides for 300 academic hours, including 210 hours of practical classes.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has reported this on its website.

"The program consists of two components: a theoretical course (90 academic hours) will be held directly in educational institutions; a practical course (210 academic hours) will be implemented in special training centers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the Ministry explained.

It is noted that the BGMT program was developed taking into account modern challenges and the experience of leading European countries, in particular Poland, Finland and the Baltic countries. It is aimed at developing the necessary military skills in young people and ensuring the readiness of citizens to defend the state.

For applicants for higher education on the basis of complete general secondary education, BGMT will be taught in the second year of study.

For higher education applicants based on the educational and qualification level of a junior specialist, the educational and professional degree of a junior bachelor and the educational degree of a junior bachelor - in the first year of study.

At the same time, if all students will take the theoretical course, then the practical one is mandatory for men who are fit for military service due to health. Women will take practical classes at will.

Theoretical training will be integrated into the curriculum as a separate discipline. Practical classes will be held during the holidays, which will avoid a conflict with basic training.

Refusal of a male applicant who is recognized as fit for military service to undergo practical training of basic training is grounds for his expulsion from the educational institution in accordance with the legislation.

After completing the course, students take a military oath and receive a certificate and a military accounting specialty. This will exempt them from mandatory basic military service, which, according to current legislation, all men aged 18-25 must complete. It is noted that basic military training will be a prerequisite for first employment in the civil service, local government bodies and the prosecutor's office.
