On Friday evening (Washington time), January 24, the United States Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. The decision was made with a narrow margin thanks to the casting vote of Vice President J.D. Vance.
The Washington Post reported this.
The Senate vote ended with a 50-50 result, as three Republicans joined Democrats in opposing Hegseth's candidacy. Vice President J.D. Vance cast the casting vote, allowing the nomination to be approved.
"It marks the second time in U.S. history that a vice president’s vote was necessary to confirm a Cabinet official, and Republicans applauded as Vance entered the chamber," WP reporters emphasized.
