US Secretary of State Rubio plans to visit Panama amid Trump's statements about Panama Canal - media

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to visit Panama as part of a trip to Latin America next week following US President Donald Trump's statements about the "return of the Panama Canal."

Bloomberg reports this with reference to a source.

In addition, according to an anonymous source, Rubio also plans to visit Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica.

The trip is expected to be Rubio's first since he was sworn in as the top US diplomat on January 20.

Usually, the first trip of the head of the Department of State is to a geopolitically important US ally: predecessors Antony Blinken went to Japan, and Rex Tillerson - to Germany.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on January 20, US President Donald Trump said during his inauguration ceremony that he intends to return the Panama Canal to American control.

Panama President José Raúl Mulino said that his country has no intention of handing over control of the Panama Canal to the US. If necessary, Panama will use international law to regulate relations with Washington.
