The Defense Intelligence together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully evacuated three Ukrainian sailors, crew members of the cargo ship Galaxy Leader, who were held captive by Yemeni Houthis.

This was reported by the Defense Intelligence press service.

"The operation to rescue Ukrainian citizens took place with the comprehensive support and assistance of the Royal Office of the Sultanate of Oman.. Now the released Ukrainian sailors are heading to meet their families. The guys are awaiting rehabilitation," the message says.

It is noted that our sailors were captured by Yemeni Houthis in the Red Sea on November 19, 2023.

"The comprehensive operation to free them lasted for over a year and included a complex informal negotiation process with the Houthis and other parties involved in the situation surrounding the detained cargo ship," the Defense Intelligence said.

Military intelligence officers established the first direct contact with the captured Ukrainians on April 3, 2024. On January 22, 2025, the Ukrainian citizens were finally released.

As a reminder, the European Parliament previously called for the release of all sailors from the Galaxy Leader vessel. Among the crew members are two citizens of Bulgaria, one of Romania, and three of Ukraine.
