Moldova refuses to participate in Eurovision 2025

Moldova will not participate in this year's Eurovision Song Contest due to the low quality of the songs and the unpopularity of the contest in the country.

This was announced by the country's public broadcaster Teleradio Moldova (TRM).

Moldova analyzed the situation in the country, as well as "economic, administrative and artistic problems" and decided not to go to the song contest this year.

"The decision was not easy, but necessary in the current conditions. This year's national selection highlighted certain problems, in particular, the decline in public interest and the overall quality of the performances," said Corneliu Durnescu, director of the Moldova 1 TV channel.

According to him, the national selection in the country needs to be improved. The broadcaster wants to revise the selection criteria so that there are more artists in the contest, from which it would be possible to choose the truly best. This should "ensure a more consistent and competitive cultural representation on the international stage."

The director of the TV channel explained that performing at Eurovision is usually expensive. You have to pay for the travel and accommodation of the entire team, as well as the work of each of its members. Moldova's participation was supposed to cost EUR 21,486, but now this money will be distributed to other projects.

"We will make sure to return to Eurovision strong. It is important to support people who want to perform on big stages and give them the opportunity to prepare better," said Daniela Crudu, head of the Eurovision delegation in Moldova.

We will remind you that this year Eurovision will be held in the Swiss city of Basel. The semi-finals, one of which will include a representative from Ukraine, will be held on May 13 and 15. The grand final will be held at the St. Jakobshalle arena on May 17.
