On his first day in office, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered U.S. government agencies to no longer issue citizenship documents to children born in the United States to parents who do not have legal status.

Trump's order prohibits federal agencies from issuing certain documents that are usually issued to U.S. citizens, according to a news release obtained by CNN.
The order will take effect within the next 30 days and will apply to children born after its enactment. It applies to circumstances where the parents are in the U.S. illegally, as well as situations where the mother is in the U.S. temporarily, such as on a visa, and the father is not a citizen.
Trump's order is based on the definition of "subject to the jurisdiction" contained in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Before that, the United States had the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1868, which guarantees citizenship to everyone born in the United States.
Supporters of a strict immigration policy argue that children of illegal immigrants are not "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States and do not have the right to be considered citizens under the Constitution.
