The Israeli cabinet has approved an agreement with the Palestinian militant group Hamas to end the fighting and release hostages in the Gaza Strip.
This was reported on the Israeli government website and Reuters.
Late on Friday evening, January 17, after a meeting that lasted more than six hours, the government ratified the agreement that could pave the way for an end to the 15-month war in the Palestinian enclave controlled by Hamas.
"The government has approved a plan to return the abductees. The hostage release plan will take effect on Sunday, January 19, 2025," the statement said.
According to the agreement, 33 Israeli hostages will be released in the first phase, including women, children, men over 50 and the wounded. More than 700 Palestinian prisoners will also be released, including 275 accused of killing Israelis.

In addition, 1,000 Palestinians detained during the war but not involved in the October 7 attacks will be released.
Humanitarian aid will also be delivered to the Gaza Strip, including 600 trucks of humanitarian aid and 50 fuel trucks, as well as 200,000 tents and 60,000 mobile homes for displaced people.
The agreement stipulates that Qatar, Egypt and the United States will act as guarantors of the agreement.
On the sixteenth day of the truce, Israel and Hamas will begin negotiations on the second phase of the agreement, which includes the release of the remaining hostages, a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
