US court sees no obstacles to banning TikTok

A ban on TikTok in the US could take effect on January 19. The court has accepted an appeal from the owners of the application, who claimed that the ban on the service allegedly violates the country's constitution.

This is reported by CNN.

Earlier, the administration of US President Joe Biden stated that TikTok poses a threat to national security due to its ties to China. Despite this, the court ruled that it is still possible to ban it. At the same time, in practice it is unknown how it will be possible to block a large social network.

In its opinion, the Supreme Court recognized that for 170 million Americans who use TikTok, it provides "a special and broad space for self-expression", but noted that Congress focused on issues of national security, which is a decisive factor.

The law will take effect on January 19, 2025, with the possibility of a one-time 90-day extension granted by the President if the sale of the social network is not completed by then.

Supporters of the ban say that the Chinese government could force ByteDance to hand over data of American users. They demand that the Chinese owners sell the social network.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US President Joe Biden will not impose a ban on TikTok, which is due to take effect the day before he leaves office on Monday, January 20, thus leaving the fate of the social network to President-elect Donald Trump.

At the same time, China is considering the possibility of selling the American division of TikTok to billionaire Elon Musk.

American content creators on TikTok are starting to actively encourage their subscribers to subscribe to their channels on alternative platforms, which are more often called Instagram or YouTube. Such calls have become more frequent after a US federal appeals court ruled that TikTok could be banned in the country if it is not sold to a US company by January 19, 2025.

Albania is banning the video platform TikTok for a year after the murder of a teenager last month. Authorities believe the app could have a negative impact on children.

In early November, the Canadian government ordered the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the social network TikTok, to close its business in the country.
