Rada to consider bill on punishing journalists for publishing information from registers

The Verkhovna Rada will again consider a bill proposing to punish journalists for publishing information from registers.

The head of the parliamentary committee on freedom of speech, MP from the Holos faction, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, wrote about this in his Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Run on a rake: continued. Bill 10242, on strengthening criminal liability for publishing information from registers, which the media community criticized last year, is again on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada," he said.

According to the MP, representatives of the monomajority did not respond to the proposal of his committee on freedom of speech to hold consultations with journalists and media experts.

"That is, they indirectly confirmed that the bill is needed only to close the possibility for investigators to ask uncomfortable questions about abuse of power. If the goal is to strengthen registry protection, then such a mechanism can definitely be found. Together," he explained the actions of the authorities.

Yurchyshyn promises that with MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak and other colleagues from the Holos faction in the Verkhovna Rada, they will submit all their amendments for confirmation.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 4, the Verkhovna Rada did not vote for the bill No. 10242.

It provides for amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine, in particular, establishing liability for unauthorized interference, sale or dissemination of information from public electronic registers, as well as strengthening punishment during martial law for crimes in the field of using information and communication systems.

In their opinion, it poses threats to freedom of speech, the protection of journalistic sources and whistleblowers of corruption.
