American companies that continue to operate in the russian market have paid more than USD 1 billion in taxes to the russian budget.

Former U.S. Ambassador to russia and Stanford University professor Michael McFaul, in a comment to Newsweek, called the actions of companies that continue to operate in russia immoral.

"It is absolutely shameful that American companies have chosen to stay in Russia and subsidize Putin's barbaric war in Ukraine. I hope shareholders in these companies will get more active in reconsidering the wisdom and morality of financing the slaughter of Ukrainian civilians. It's not too late to do the right thing," McFaul said.

In second place in terms of tax payments were German companies, which transferred USD 693 million to the russian budget. Austria came in third with tax deductions of USD 579 million.

Newsweek recalled that foreign companies that intend to leave the russian market face tough conditions set by the russian authorities. Among them are a 15 percent exit tax and a mandatory 50 percent discount when selling assets.
