In Tibet, number of earthquake victims almost doubled on the 3rd day of search, 126 people killed

On the third day of the search, after it was expanded to a remote district at the foot of the Himalayas, it became known that the number of victims of the earthquake in Tibet had almost doubled - to 337 people. The death toll is 126 people.

This is reported by Reuters.

Thus, the Chinese state newspaper Global Times reported that 337 people were injured as a result of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake, which is the first increase since the initial assessment on Tuesday of 188 people. At the same time, the number of deaths remained at 126 people.

It is noted that it is currently unclear how many people are still missing, but after three days, according to experts, those who were under the rubble most likely died from hypothermia. Nighttime temperatures in the region average minus 10 degrees Celsius to minus 15 degrees Celsius at this time of year, without taking into account the wind chill.

In addition, more than 1,600 aftershocks had hit the disaster zone by Friday, making it difficult to move more than 47,000 affected people to temporary shelters.

The authorities also need to find long-term housing for tens of thousands of displaced people, in addition to warm tents, while ensuring a steady supply of daily necessities.

The government has sent 743,000 tons of products such as grain, oil, meat and vegetables to the region, and the Ministry of Commerce said another 2,000 tons of frozen pork and 1,600 tons of frozen beef and lamb are ready for shipment.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Tuesday, January 7, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the northern foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet's holiest cities.
