Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal says that stopping oil transit through the Druzhba oil pipeline would be a violation by Ukraine of the Energy Charter Treaty and the Association Agreement with the European Union.
He said this during the "hour of questions to government" in the Verkhovna Rada, broadcast by Oleksii Honcharenko, MP from the European Solidarity faction, on his YouTube channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Oil transit through the territory of Ukraine is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Energy Charter Treaty and the Association Agreement with the EU on ensuring freedom of transit, and also meets the conditions of the sixth package of EU sanctions," the head of government said.
According to Shmyhal, Ukraine's violation of its international obligations can be used as a basis for holding the country accountable for stopping uninterrupted oil supplies, in particular, to Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and for putting forward appropriate financial conditions after international arbitration.
At the same time, Shmyhal advocates stopping trade in russian oil.
"Regarding the ban on transit and trade in any russian energy products, russian minerals, fossil fuels, any of their minerals, the government is making every effort to stop trade in any russian molecule at all. Personally, my position is to stop trade in any russian molecule," he said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in September 2024, the transit of russian oil through the Ukrainian part of the Druzhba oil pipeline increased by 37% to 1.06 million tons compared to August.
