Poland promises not to arrest Netanyahu if he visits Auschwitz liberation anniversary

The Polish government has guaranteed that Israeli representatives, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will be safe and will be able to freely participate in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

This is evidenced by a resolution of the Council of Ministers.

The document states that such guarantees are part of "commemorating the Jewish nation, millions of whose daughters and sons became victims of the Holocaust committed by the Third Reich."

According to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, "it was obvious from the very beginning" that the Prime Minister, President or any other representative of the state of Israel should have full rights and security if he visits the Auschwitz concentration camp.

At the same time, he stated that he did not want Poland to be among the countries that ignore the decisions of international tribunals.

In response, ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah said that member states cannot unilaterally determine the validity of the organization's legal decisions.

"This is not only a legal obligation before the Court under the Rome Statute, but also before other member states," he said in a comment to Ukrinform.

As a reminder, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al Masri for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In their decision to issue the warrants, the ICC judges said that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant are criminally responsible for the famine in Gaza and the persecution of Palestinians.

In turn, the Office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized and called "anti-Semitic" the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants against him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

US President Joe Biden criticized the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

It should be noted that in September, russian dictator vladimir putin made his first visit to an ICC member state after an arrest warrant was issued for him in March 2023 for the abduction of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine.

On September 3, a spokesman for the Mongolian government said that the country was unable to arrest russian dictator vladimir putin because it is dependent on imports of russian oil products.
