EU ready to lead support for Ukraine in absence of US assistance — Kallas

The European Union is ready to take the initiative to provide support to Ukraine if the U.S. no longer wants to do so.

Politico writes this with reference to the relevant statement by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

Kallas expressed confidence that all EU countries, as well as the US, are ready to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against russian aggression.

"The European Union is also ready to take over this leadership if the United States is not willing to," said Kallas.

She added that Western countries should not speculate on whether the change of the U.S. President will affect the level of support that Washington provides to Kyiv.

In addition, according to Kallas, it is not in the interests of the U.S. for russia "to be the strongest power in the world."

Politico writes that Kallas' words contrast with the statements of her predecessor, Josep Borrell.

Last year, he said that Europe " cannot fill the gap" if the U.S. decides to reduce support for Ukraine after Donald Trump's inauguration.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Financial Times, citing sources, wrote that Trump's close aides assure European officials that assistance will continue to be provided to Ukraine.

In particular, Trump will maintain the supply of weapons to Kyiv from the U.S. after his inauguration.

At the same time, Trump will demand that NATO member countries increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP.
