Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he is stepping down from his post and will no longer be the leader of the Liberal Party.

This is reported by DW.

"I intend to resign as leader of the party, as Prime Minister after the party elects its next leader," Trudeau said in a public speech on Monday.

This was preceded by a series of statements from Liberal party representatives calling for Trudeau to resign.

Trudeau also said that parliament would be suspended until March 24.

Justin Trudeau has served as Canada's Prime Minister since November 2015, making him the country's longest-serving Prime Minister.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US President-elect Donald Trump joked during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last Friday that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
