15 killed as US Army veteran with ISIS flag drives truck into crowd of New Year's Eve celebrants

A US Army veteran, waving an ISIS flag, drove his truck into a crowd of people celebrating New Year's Eve in New Orleans' French Quarter. At least 15 people were killed and 30 more were injured, Reuters reported on Thursday, January 2.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen from Texas, drove his truck into a crowd of people celebrating New Year's Eve at a popular spot in the French Quarter. 15 people were killed and about 30 were injured, including two police officers. The attacker was killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) suspects that Jabbar had accomplices.

"We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible. We are thoroughly examining all leads, including his known associates. Investigators are examining a large number of suspects," FBI Assistant Special Agent Alethea Duncan told reporters.

An ISIS flag was attached to a pole sticking out of the trailer of the rental car, which is why the FBI suspects the attacker of terrorist ties. In addition, police found a weapon and an explosive device in the truck, and two more potential explosive devices were found in the French Quarter.

Reuters notes that Jabbar was in the regular army from March 2007 to January 2015, and then in the army reserves from January 2015 to July 2020. From February 2009 to January 2010, he was in Afghanistan, and ended his service with the rank of staff sergeant.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on January 1, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded near the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas (USA).
