Private remittances decreasing, while cash currency outside banks increasing

The volume of private remittances in November decreased by 18% and amounted to USD 0.8 billion.

This is evidenced by data from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Wages received by Ukrainians from abroad decreased by 22.2%, while other private remittances received through official channels decreased by 17.1%.

In general, 19.5% fewer remittances were sent through official channels than in November last year, while the flow through informal channels decreased by 16.0% compared to November last year.

In total, for January-November 2024, remittances decreased by 15.0%: net wages decreased by 27.5%, while private transfers increased by 9.7%.

It is reported that the net increase in the external position of the real sector (excluding foreign direct investment) amounted to USD 0.7 billion: an increase in cash currency outside banks by USD 1.6 billion (in November 2023 - USD 1.0 billion) was partially offset by a net decrease in trade credit debt (by USD 0.7 billion).

For January-November 2024, the growth in cash currency outside banks is estimated at USD 14.9 billion, for the corresponding period in 2023 - USD 10.2 billion.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the volume of private remittances in 2023 decreased by 7.8% compared to 2022 and amounted to USD 11.6 billion.

In 2021, the volume of remittances to Ukraine increased by 25.4% to USD 15.026 billion compared to 2020.

In 2020, the volume of remittances increased by 1.7% to a record USD 12.1 billion.
