US President Joe Biden has officially announced the death of former President Jimmy Carter and declared January 9 a day of mourning.
This is announced in a statement published by the White House.
Thus, in the statement, Biden officially announced the death of James Earl Carter, the thirty-ninth President of the United States, which occurred on December 29, 2024.
The current US President ordered that in honor and memory of Carter, the US flags be lowered, including at the White House, for a period of 30 days from the date of the death of the former President.
"I also designate January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to gather on that day in their respective places of worship to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr. I invite people around the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn commemoration," the statement said.
Biden recalled that under Carter's leadership, the modern U.S. Department of Education and Department of Energy were created. He also advocated for environmental protection and led efforts to combat nuclear proliferation, signed the Panama Canal treaties and brokered the historic Camp David Accords of 1978.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Sunday, December 29, it became known that former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100.
Carter served as President from January 1977 to January 1981 after defeating Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 U.S. election.
