WHO chief hit by airstrike at Yemen airport

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, was with United Nations staff at Yemen's main airport when it was hit by Israeli airstrikes on Thursday, December 26, killing at least two people, Ghebreyesus said on his X-account and Politico reported.

The WHO chief was about to board his plane when the airport "came under airstrikes."

"As we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, about two hours ago, the airport came under aerial bombardment. One of our plane’s crew members was injured. At least two people were reported killed at the airport. The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged," Ghebreyesus said.

After some time, the damage to the airport was repaired, and the WHO head and UN staff left. Ghebreyesus condemned the escalation between Yemen and Israel. In response, the Israeli military said it had attacked military infrastructure used by Yemeni Houthi rebels at Sanaa airport, as well as ports and power plants, claiming they were being used to smuggle Iranian weapons.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 29, Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said they had launched a surface-to-surface ballistic missile at an airport in Israel where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plane was landing.
