German President dissolves Bundestag

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced the dissolution of the Bundestag on Friday, December 27, and set early elections for February 23, 2025. This decision was made at the request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had previously been voted out of office by the parliamentarians, DW reports.

Back on December 20, Steinmeier announced his intention to dissolve the German parliament. At that time, he emphasized that "the prospect of creating a stable parliamentary majority for the federal government no longer exists."

During the December 16 vote of confidence in the federal government led by Olaf Scholz, 394 parliamentarians voted against. Only 207 parliamentarians supported the government, and another 116 abstained.

The vote of no confidence in the coalition government was expressed by representatives of the largest opposition faction, the conservative bloc, which includes the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU). Also voting against were representatives of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which left the ruling coalition, as well as parliamentarians from the Left Party, populists from the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (SWA) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Parliamentarians from the Green Party, which remained in the government, abstained from voting.
