Romania to close 30 border crossings due to joining Schengen zone

From January 1, 2025, Romania will close more than 30 land border crossings due to the country's accession to the Schengen zone.

This was reported by the Digi24 TV channel, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The border crossing points (checkpoints) will be closed because joining the Schengen zone abolishes control over people at the internal land borders between Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary, which are already part of Schengen.

In Romania, document control will still be carried out at the border for six months after accession, and after that - increased control along the border. The reason is the problems with illegal migration that the country has faced.

The TV company notes that the border police will be able to conduct random checks both in the old customs area and in the green zones - those that delimit the territory of the state without customs checkpoints.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the head of the European Union's migration service, Ylva Johansson, said that the European Union is likely to tighten visa restrictions for russian citizens. According to her, russians traveling through the Schengen zone pose a serious threat to European security.

Romania and Bulgaria will join the Schengen zone on January 1, 2025.
