Murder of Farion. Zinchenko's case sent to court with new crime qualification

Vyacheslav Zinchenko, suspected of the murder of professor and linguist Iryna Farion, has had his crime qualification changed and the materials sent to court.

This was announced in a statement by the National Police of Ukraine on Thursday, December 26.

Zinchenko is charged with intentional murder of a person in connection with the performance of her public duty for reasons of national intolerance, as well as illegal handling of weapons. He faces life imprisonment.

"As the police established, in 2022 the suspect in the murder of a well-known public figure Iryna Farion - an 18-year-old resident of the city of Dnipro - became a member of a group on one of the messengers that promotes the cult of violence and cruelty, as well as racial, national and religious intolerance and discrimination. In addition, in 2024 he joined another group associated with a russian neo-Nazi organization," the report says.

Zinchenko developed a personal dislike for Farion because of her active position in protecting the Ukrainian language and culture, as he believed that the linguist was splitting national unity. The indictment was sent to court under the following articles:

  • Part 1 of Article 263 (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives)
  • Clauses 8, 14 of Part 2 of Article 115 (Intentional murder of a person in connection with the performance of his public duty for reasons of national intolerance) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in August, Vyacheslav Zinchenko, suspected of the murder of professor and linguist Iryna Farion, was transferred to another detention center for his personal protection.

On November 13, the court extended the arrest of the suspect in the murder of Farion.

As a reminder, on July 25, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the suspect in the murder of Farion was detained in Dnipro.
