After cessation of hostilities. US makes statement on Ukraine's accession to NATO

Ukraine's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) may take place after the cessation of hostilities.

Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council of the Joe Biden Administration Michael Carpenter stated this during a telethon.

In his opinion, the highest security guarantee for Ukraine would be membership in NATO.

"I think that the highest security guarantee for Ukraine is membership in NATO. Article 5 is the most reliable, safest form of guarantees that states can have. It is vital for Ukraine to get it," said Carpenter.

At the same time, he believes that it is very difficult to achieve this now, since the hot phase of the russian federation's war against Ukraine is ongoing. Also, the decision on Ukraine's accession to NATO will require political will from all members of the Alliance.

“So here's how I see it. When the fighting stops, if this goal is achieved, then NATO membership can follow. And this will guarantee security for Ukraine,” Carpenter stressed.

According to him, it is now necessary to think about what temporary guarantees could be offered to Ukraine now. In particular, Carpenter supported the idea of a European peacekeeping mission that would guarantee Ukraine that russia would not go further if a peace agreement is signed.

"In my opinion, it would make sense to have several EU countries invest in Ukraine's success and help stabilize the situation," the U.S. official concluded.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in late November it became known that Cyprus had expressed a desire to become a NATO member. According to Cypriot media, Washington approved this plan.

In September 2024, NATO countries called on their allies to strengthen the air defense of the alliance's eastern flank.

Recall that NATO is developing a plan to block the russian fleet in the Baltic Sea in the event of a conflict.
