The US accused China of supporting russia in the war against Ukraine, noting that Beijing's actions contradicted statements about peace.
The relevant statement was made by the US permanent representative to the UN Robert Wood at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The American diplomat emphasized that China's support for russia contradicts the principles of the UN Charter.
"China stated in this Council that sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected. But if it were serious about this, it would use its influence to stop the russian federation from violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine," Wood noted.
According to him, China continues to supply russia with dual-use goods that support the russian military-industrial complex. These include materials for making bombs, spare parts for machines, equipment for weapons factories, as well as technologies for drones and missiles.
The diplomat stressed that Chinese products are being used by russia to strike civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine. Moreover, Chinese companies are helping russia develop and manufacture long-range drones.
"Beijing, which continues these exports, demonstrates its tacit approval of russia's war," Wood stressed.
Wood also stressed that China is not using its influence in a constructive way, providing political cover for russia, repeating Kremlin propaganda and effectively ignoring the UN Charter.
"If China truly wants a 'peaceful resolution' to russia's war against Ukraine, it should stop providing support to the russian military machine, impose sanctions on the russian federation, call on Moscow to withdraw its troops, and demonstrate leadership to the international community as a permanent member of this Council responsible for upholding the principles of the UN Charter," Robert Wood emphasized.
