Number of Americans who support Ukraine and end war divided in half in US - Gallup

The number of Americans who support ending the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, even if it fails to return the territories captured by russia, has for the first time exceeded the number of those who support continuing assistance with the aim of liberating them. The advantage turned out to be small, but at the beginning of the war, supporters of opposing russian aggression were more than twice as many as "peacemakers".

The US should continue to help Ukraine regain its lands, even if this leads to prolonging the military conflict - this is what 48% of those surveyed by the Gallup sociological service on December 4-15 answered. The share of supporters of ending the conflict as soon as possible, even at the cost of giving up territories, was 50%.

Until now, the majority of Americans supported the fight until victory. In the first survey in August 2022, 66% of them were in favor of a quick ceasefire agreement, compared to 31% who favored a quick ceasefire. Then the figures gradually converged, in a previous poll in March 2024, the ratio was 55% to 43%.

Donald Trump, who during the election campaign said that he would achieve an end to the war "in 24 hours", has probably contributed to the change in mood. He also said that he could do it even before he takes office, which is scheduled for January 20, 2025. Trump's special representative for russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, even said the other day that a ceasefire agreement could be reached by the end of this year.

However, Ukrainian political analyst Oleksandr Kochetkov called this view of the conflict “crazy”: “Kellogg, and Trump too, are in for some unpleasant revelations. I can imagine their surprise when they learn (it’s enough to listen to putin’s press conference on Thursday) that putin wants to fight with Ukraine, with Europe, with the whole world, as long as he’s alive.”

“Donald Trump will take office a month before the third anniversary of russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the President-elect has said he will quickly negotiate an end to the war,” Gallup writes. “While this aligns with the views of his fellow Republicans, most Democrats disagree, and independent voters are evenly divided.”

Republicans are mostly in favor of a quick end to the war and less support for Ukraine, while Democrats are generally in favor of long-term support and at least maintaining the current level of aid to Ukraine, Gallup notes.

Overall, 37% of Americans now believe that the US is doing too much to support Ukraine; 31% believe the scale of assistance is adequate; 30% view it as insufficient.
