111 years ago, world saw the first modern crossword. What it looked like and who created it

On December 21, 1913, the first modern crossword was published in the Sunday supplement to the American newspaper The New York World. The author of the puzzle was journalist Arthur Wynn, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The crossword, created by Arthur Wynn, was called "Fun's Word-Cross Puzzle" and had the shape of a rhombus. In 1914, the name of the puzzle was transformed into the familiar one - "Crossword".

Despite the fact that Wynn's crossword was based on earlier forms of puzzles, it contained a number of innovations, in particular, the tasks contained numbers for horizontal and vertical words, and the instructions were short, but precise, which made it easier to find answers.

This type of puzzle quickly became popular, so Arthur Wynn continued to compose weekly crosswords until he retired in 1918. Crosswords also began to be published in other newspapers. And in 1924, the first crossword book appeared, which was published by Simon & Schuster.

Today, there are many types of crosswords: classic, cryptograms, scanwords, Japanese crosswords, filwords and others. Each of them has its own form and rules for solving.

Crosswords help improve memory, expand vocabulary, and maintain brain activity. They are recommended for the prevention of cognitive impairment in old age.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, gamers spend more time watching videos about video games than playing them directly.
